Kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract. Most kidney stones pass out of the body without any intervention by a physician. Stones that cause lasting symptoms or other complications may be treated by various techniques. If the stone is too large to pass easily, pain continues as the muscles in the wall of the tiny ureter try to squeeze the stone along into the bladder. As a stone grows or moves, blood may appear in the urine. If fever and chills accompany any of these symptoms, then contact the doctor immediately. What is Ureteroscopic Stone Removal ?
The kidney stones in the mid and lower-ureters can be removed only with the procedure of ureteroscopy. In this procedure , no incision is required. The surgeon passes a small fiber optic instrument called an ureteroscope through the urethra and bladder into the ureter. Once the stone is located, the surgeon removes it with a cage-like device or shatters it with a special instrument that produces a form of shock wave. A small tube or stent may be left in the ureter for a few days to help the lining of the ureter heal. Before fiber optics made ureteroscopy possible, physicians used a similar "blind basket" extraction method. However, this is an outdated technique . This may cause damage to the ureters. What Happens After The Surgery?
Ureteroscopic Stone Removal is an overnight or outpatient procedure . If there is bleeding during the surgery, a small tube called catheter is inserted into the bladder. This would be removed the following day. For a few days after surgery one may feel some pain . Painkillers are the only solution for the pain after the surgery. There may be a slight blood stain in the urine for 24-48 hrs . It is normal. However ,if one finds it difficult to pass urine or if there are blood clots or heavy bleeding accompanied with burning or stinging sensation and fever, meet the General Practitioner without delay. The patients may feel bit tired after the surgery, so it recommended to take off from work for a week atleast. It is not advisable to drive for the next 48 hours after the surgery.
