Kidney stones are differentiated based on what they are made up of or their composition. There are five basic sorts of kidney stones but most stones are either calcium stones or uric acid stones 1. Calcium Stone - The most common type of kidney stone is made up of calcium binding to mainly to oxalates but to phosphates as well. Both oxalates and phosphates are found in the food consumed regularly, but unlike phosphates, oxalates are not that useful to anyone. 2. Uric Acid Stone - it is relatively common type of kidney stone and especially in people with gout. Effective treatment of gout has made it a less frequent complication than it used to be. 3. It now happens mostly in people with no obvious uric acid problems. 4. Struvite Stone - it is often called the infection stone as because it usually requires a urinary tract infection with certain types of bacteria to make them. They can grow rapidly over a period of weeks and absorb the entire inside of the kidney. 5. Cystine Stone - it is also a relatively rare type of kidney stone found in people with a genetic kidney disorder called cystinuria. They lean to occur at a much earlier age than other types of stones. 6. Drug Stone - Certain drugs can crystallize to form stones. The most common involve indinavir and triamterene.
Kidney stones can be made of more than one type: Although a kidney stone is usually classified into one of these five categories, one must realize that some kidney stones are made up of two or more types. In fact it is not uncommon for one type of stone to act as a nidus or starting spot for another. Kidney stones may contain various groupings of chemicals. Most common stone type:
The most common type of stone contains calcium in combination with either oxalate or phosphate. These chemicals are a part of a person's normal diet and make up important parts of the body, like bones and muscles. A less common type of stone is sourced by infection in the urinary tract. This type of stone is called a struvite or infection stone. Much less common are the uric acid stone and the rare cystine stone. |
